First doctorate of the IIOT communication technology working group

Congratulations

Mr. Nordmeyer successfully defended his dissertation with a topic on radio readout of optical sensors on 02.04.2025 with the grade summa cum laude. In his thesis, Mr. Nordmeyer proposed a novel evaluation principle for fiber Bragg grating-based sensors in which the exciting optical signal of the sensor is amplitude modulated and thus the sensor information is encoded in the phase of the readout signal. This means that the signal influenced by the sensor can be opto-electrically converted without complex optical instruments and emitted directly as a radio signal. The digital signal processing for evaluating the sensor data can be carried out effectively for a large number of sensors in a sensor network in a central readout unit connected by radio. Mr. Nordmeyer was able to apply for a patent, publish three conference papers and three journal articles while working on his doctorate.

His work is the first doctorate in the Communication Technology for the Industrial Internet of Things working group. This working group was newly created with the appointment of Prof. Neumann in April 2022. The professorship focuses on the development and improvement of communication systems that are essential for the networking of sensors and actuators in the digitalization of industry. These systems enable the monitoring and control of processes in various application areas, such as production, logistics and traffic management. A central goal of the professorship is to train people who can understand and further develop these technologies. Interested parties are invited to participate in research projects, doctoral theses or practice-oriented topics.
